Ingredients

Scale

For the BBQ Chicken

  • 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 1½ cups barbecue sauce
  • ¼ cup chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

For Serving

  • 8 hamburger buns
  • Coleslaw (optional)
  • Pickle slices (optional)
  • Extra barbecue sauce for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Prepare the chicken: Place chicken breasts in a single layer at the bottom of the slow cooker.
  2. Make the BBQ sauce mixture: In a bowl, combine barbecue sauce, chicken broth, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well.
  3. Add sauce: Pour the mixture evenly over the chicken, coating all pieces.
  4. Slow cook: Cover and cook on LOW for 6–7 hours or HIGH for 3–4 hours until chicken is tender and easy to shred.
  5. Shred the chicken: Remove chicken and shred using two forks.
  6. Mix back into sauce: Return shredded chicken to the slow cooker and stir well. Let it rest for 10–15 minutes to absorb flavor.
  7. Assemble sandwiches: Toast buns if desired, then add BBQ chicken. Top with coleslaw, pickles, or extra sauce.
  8. Serve: Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • Use chicken thighs or breasts—thighs give extra juicy and tender results.
  • Slow cook until shreddable for the best texture and flavor absorption.
  • Toast the buns before serving to prevent sogginess and improve taste.
