Ingredients

Scale

For the Pasta

  • 12 ounces penne or fettuccine pasta – Holds the creamy sauce beautifully.
  • 1 tablespoon salt (for pasta water) – Seasons the pasta from the inside out.

For the Creamy Tomato Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil – For sautéing the aromatics.
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter – Adds richness and silky texture.
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced – Fresh garlic provides bold flavor.
  • 1 small onion, finely diced – Adds natural sweetness.
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste – Intensifies the tomato flavor.
  • 1 (15-ounce) can crushed tomatoes – Forms the base of the sauce.
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning – Adds classic herb flavor.
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano – Enhances the sauce.
  • ½ teaspoon paprika – Adds subtle warmth.
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste – Balances the flavors.
  • 1 cup heavy cream – Creates a rich, creamy sauce.
  • ¾ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese – Adds savory depth.
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional) – Adds gentle heat.

For the Fresh Basil Finish

  • ½ cup chopped fresh basil – Adds vibrant freshness.
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley – For garnish.
  • Extra grated Parmesan cheese – For serving.

Optional Add-Ins

  • Grilled chicken
  • Italian sausage
  • Shrimp
  • Baby spinach
  • Mushrooms
  • Sun-dried tomatoes
  • Mozzarella pearls

Instructions

  1. Bring salted water to a boil and cook the pasta until al dente. Reserve ½ cup pasta water and drain.
  2. Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet, then sauté the onion until soft.
  3. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant.
  4. Stir in tomato paste and cook for 1–2 minutes.
  5. Add crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, oregano, paprika, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 8–10 minutes.
  6. Reduce heat and stir in the heavy cream until smooth.
  7. Add the Parmesan cheese and stir until melted.
  8. Toss the cooked pasta into the sauce, adding reserved pasta water if needed.
  9. Stir in the fresh basil.
  10. Garnish with Parmesan, parsley, and basil before serving hot.

Notes

  • Reserve pasta water to create a silky, restaurant-style sauce.
  • Stir in fresh basil just before serving for the best flavor.
