Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk

For the Frosting

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Flag Decoration

  • 2 cups fresh blueberries
  • 3 cups fresh strawberries, sliced

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
  3. Beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla. Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk until smooth.
  4. Pour batter into pan and bake for 30–35 minutes. Cool completely.
  5. Beat cream cheese until smooth. Add powdered sugar and vanilla. Whip cream to stiff peaks and fold into the mixture.
  6. Spread frosting evenly over the cooled cake.
  7. Decorate with blueberries in the top-left corner and strawberry rows to form the American flag design.
  8. Chill until ready to serve.

Notes

Pat the strawberries and blueberries dry before decorating to prevent excess moisture from affecting the frosting.

Chill the cake for at least 30 minutes before serving for cleaner slices and a firmer texture.

For the freshest appearance, decorate with the berries within 24 hours of serving.
